This Institute was founded in the year 1984 by late Shri T.R Kirad and his daughter Smt Uma Kirad-Tilak. Shri T.R Kirad a well known industrialist is awarded by four national awards for his work in vaccum plant industry.
Smt Uma Tilak, a famous personality is a Bharatanatyam dancer in Maharashtra(India). She is running this institute since the very start ie.1984. Her husband, Shri Vishvajit Tilak is a great helping hand in managing all the activities of Kalaniketan.
The annual term of the institution starts from Dassera, every year. Admissions are given on this auspicious day only, after performing the holy Saraswati puja rituals. Hundreds of students have made a name for themselves as good performing artists as well as teachers.
Examinations are held every year. The students scoring highest marks in the annual examinations are awarded 'Merit Certificates' and 'Medals'.
'Certificates of Training' is issued at the time of Arangetram ie. first stage performance. Facilities for advanced lessons in theory, practicals and teacher's training are also available. Students continuing thereafter, would also be given apportunities for performing onstage programmes and also for conducting the classes run by this institute.
From year 1999, students can also appear for the examinations held by Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (Mumbai) and Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (Pune), so that they can also get degree of 'Visharad', 'Alankar', 'Acharya', 'Shiksha Parangat' from the above institute.
After passing the above exams, students can get the job of teaching in the following universities.

Dance and Music performances for the students of Kalaniketan are organised regularly.
Kalaniketan has laid down certain "Requirements" which should be observed.
